The SBLC is a nonprofit, 501c3 organization, and does not develop projects to make a profit of any kind. Numbers presented here are on a cost-only basis. Also, costs can frequently be offset by seeking grants to leverage dollars available in our partner communities, sponsorships can be obtained, and more. In other words, this section is intended to describe how much it costs to develop a survey in a community, not necessarily how much it would cost YOU as a partner community!
We also believe that a subscription-based model is both possible and even preferable, so perhaps your community could cover costs over a longer period of time, rather than a one-time funding cycle. In other words, we are here for you and the work is more important to us, as a nonprofit dedicated to conservation and elevating landscapes for all!
Costs
Based on previous surveys and benchmarking costs against partner organizations completing similar surveys of other communities, SBLC charges $1.20 per parcel. A breakdown of associated costs are found in the table below and this per parcel cost allows for easy calculation of cost depending on the number of parcels that the partner community wishes to survey. The numbers below provides a cost breakdown for a parcel survey of a hypothetical example community of 15,099 parcels (and a population of about 35,000, for comparison):
Software costs:
$3,710.33
Labor for surveying, meetings, and reports
$10,698.13
Transportation
$2,659.07
Report production & printing
$309.19
Technology (equipment) cost
$742.07
TOTAL
$18,118.80
Number of parcels in example community
15,099
Per parcel cost
$1.20
These costs represent the actual SBLC costs for a one-time survey of a community. This data is most useful when measured over time and best practices suggest that a survey should be conducted every 2-3 years so that changes over time can be observed and leaders are able to act proactively rather than reactively as trends are identified. In many examples of surveys completed by partner organizations, local philanthropy often steps up to assist with a community assessment such as this.
